Description
- Edwin Brown of Coventry
- A saddled bay hunter tethered to a gatehouse, with a terrier
- signed and dated, lower left: E. Brown / 1843
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 20 November 1992, lot 105A, where acquired.
Condition
The canvas has a rather firm relining, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching along the margins, particularly the upper margin, and some very thin, minimal retouching along stretcher marks, particularly left, and upper. There is a fine network of retouching to reduce the appearance of craquelure, particularly centre left and around the horse, centre - although the horse itself remains largely untouched. There is some strengthening in the crossbars, right, as well as some retouching in the darker areas of this shadowy part of the painting. In overall fair condition.
