Description
- ink on paper
mounted as a handscroll, inscribed in Chinese and Manchurian in ink and colour, the eight sections of different coloured silk brocade woven with ruyi-cloud patterns, the opening section with two dragons flanking the characters fengtian gaoming ('imperial mandate of heaven') and repeated in the Manchurian section, the yellow brocade impressed with two imperial seals dated to the 12th month, 21st year of Daoguang (corresponding to 1841), a further section of textile forming a protective covering over the rolled scroll
Condition
There are tears along the edges of the scroll as well as creases and loose threads. There are also a few stain marks and surface wear, all consistent with age of this type of edict.
