Catalogue Note
The Presbyterian Faith as set forth by the Westminster Assembly of 1643. The Assembly consisted of Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Independents, and Erastians. In the long drawn-out sessions, and after long controversies, it issued the Westminster Confession, the two Catechisms, the larger and shorter, all contained in this volume. "The confession expounded in 33 chapters all the leading articles of the Christian Faith. It taught emphatically the Calvinistic doctrine of election, though it recognized freedom of will. Great stress was laid on the identification of the Jewish Sabbath with the christian Sunday and the due observance of the Sunday rest …. The confession at once established itself as the definite statement of Presbyterian doctrine in the English-speaking world. It exercised a deep influence on other groups of Calvinists" (Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church).
