Catalogue Note
A long and significant letter by the Dutch theologian Jakob Hermanszoon (Latinized as Arminius). Arminius founded the anti-Calvinist Reformed Dutch Church, which created the Remonstrant movement in Holland. He here writes to a fellow "preacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ," Joannes Hitzenbach, about the organization and doctrine of the Dutch Reformed Church. Arminius discusses the doctrine to be taught in Churches at Haarle, Alkmaar, Edam, Hoorn, and Enkhuysen, as well as the organization of the Reformed Church on lines similar to the Calvinist system of classes and synods. Letters by Arminius are extremely rare on the market.
