Condition
Good condition overall with some surface abrasions due to outside exposure. The nose tip appears to have been restored, some natural grey veining and natural inclusions. A few minor remain of a metallic hook to the back.

Catalogue Note
Raon reçut ses premiers enseignements auprès de son père avant de partir pour Rome, en 1666, en tant que pensionnaire de l’Académie de France. Il y séjournera trois ans, étudiant les modèles antiques qui auront une grande influence sur son œuvre. De retour en France, il est reçu membre à l’Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture en 1672 ; il en deviendra également professeur en 1690. Il obtiendra par ailleurs de nombreuses commandes privées, dont celle d'une série de bustes sculptés en hermès pour le château de Thoiry. Il déclinera le thème des Muses ou des allégories des Saisons dans des bustes en hermès aux visages juveniles et souriants. Jusqu'en 1699, Raon sera grandement impliqué dans le vaste programme élaboré par Charles Le Brun à Versailles pour Louis XIV. Il participera également aux chantiers royaux de Clagny, Marly et Meudon ainsi qu’aux décors de l’église des Invalides. On trouve à Versailles plusieurs exemples de ses bustes en hermès, notamment celui de Galathée, formant pendant d’Acis, très comparabale au nôtre.
