Condition

Very good condition overall, with minor wear to the patina consistent with age and handling. Very good quality of cast fire and detailed. Few lacks to the base.

Catalogue Note

Issu d’une famille de bronziers actifs à Padoue, Aspetti part pour Venise, dans un environnement artisitique marqué par l’influence de Jacopo Sansovino (1486-1570) et Danese Cattaneo (1512-1572). Il se forme alors auprès de son contemporain, Girolamo Campagna (1549-1625), dont l’atelier florissant rayonne dans toute la Vénétie, à Padoue et jusqu’en Toscane. Giovanni Grimani, homme d’église influent, grand collectionneur et mécène éclairé sera son principal soutien. Il réalisera de nombreux bronzes à sa demande et restaurera plusieurs de ses antiques. Le contraposto gracieux de Judith – au visage délicat et aux belles mains aux longs doigts fins -, contraste de manière saisissante avec la gigantesque tête barbue d’Holopherne. Un bronze de ce modèle se trouve au Kunsthistorishe Museum de Viennes.
