Bae Se Hwa

Born in 1980 in Seoul, Bae Se Hwa currently lives and works in Paju, South Korea. He graduated from Hongik University in Seoul in 2007 with a BFA in Woodworking and Furniture Design. Three years later Se Hwa made his international debut at the Design Miami Fair in Basel, Switzerland and has been a sensation in the design world since.

Bae Se Hwa is mostly known for his collection of minimalistic yet curvaceous design furniture from the Steam Series, produced utilizing the handcraft method of steam-bending wood. Design pieces from this series are inspired by the Korean principle of baesanimsu, suggesting that the ideal house should have a stream flowing in the front and a mountain at the back. This philosophy is well reflected in the organic and fluid forms of the furniture from this collection.

Bae Se Hwa’s work has been widely exhibited in Korea and abroad, including the US, the UK, Canada, Germany and Japan. He has also participated in many prestigious design fairs and received a number of awards, including the Gold Prize in the 2009 Gyeong’gi Furniture Competition.
