Catalogue Note

Zhang Zhouije

Born in 1984, Zhoujie Zhang is best known for his fantastical designs that bring to mind digitisation and galactic travels. He commenced his higher education by obtaining a degree in Industrial Design from the China Academy of Art, and later, received a Masters of Art in Industrial Design from the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.

Upon his return to China, he set out to explore new design methods utilizing innovative computer technology to produce steel designs. Unable to find a manufacturer to collaborate with, he founded his own studio in Shanghai in 2010 to explore his design direction. He spent 18 months perfecting his trade – welding, cutting, polishing, and manufacturing – thus gaining an intimate, step-by-step understanding of the manufacturing and production processes.

Despite his young age, he has participated in over 30 exhibitions, including shows in London and Milan. During his first exhibition at the 100% Design in London, Zhoujie’s digital furniture sold out in less than half an hour to collectors and gallery owners from around the world. In the last four years, the designer received a number of prestigious awards, including the ELLE Deco Young Designer of the Year 2012, the IF Design Award China and the SHDC 50/100 Young Talent of the Year.
