Catalogue Note

The present manuscript genealogy traces the line of the Madaniyya Shadhiliyya order from The Prophet Muhammad to Muhammad Zafir al-Madani, a major spiritual and political advisor to Sultan 'Abdulhamid II (r.1867-1909). Various spiritual teachers of the order are mentioned in lobed roundels, beneath the depiction of the Shadhiliyya shaykhs' colourful headwear. For more on the order, see F. De Jong, 'Madaniyya', in The Encyclopaedia of Islam, vol.V, Leiden, 1986, pp.948-9.
