Catalogue Note
S'il illustre le style classique des Shona, cet appui-tête se distingue par son exceptionnelle dimension et par son ancienneté. Chez les Shona, seuls les hommes matures possédaient et utilisaient des appuis-tête car ils étaient les seuls autorisés à visiter dans leurs rêves les ancêtres. Leurs symboles géométriques évoquent le corps de la femme et les scarifications qui lui étaient réservées, ainsi que - notamment dans le petit rectangle central - le clan de son possesseur (Phillips, Africa: The Art of a Continent, 1995, p.204). Tandis que le modelé très sensible des formes révèle l'ancienneté de sa facture, la très belle patine sombre et brillante, dévoilant sur le linteau la veinure tourmentée du bois dur, atteste de l'usage prolongé de cet objet emblématique célébrant, par son hommage aux femmes, la continuité du lignage.
