Le port d’une massue - insigne prestigieux - n’était autorisé qu’aux hommes initiés. Celle-ci affirme avec force le goût des artistes sud-africains pour les motifs semi-figuratifs chargés de sens : sa tête, composée de cinq disques dont la taille décroit à partir du centre, évoque sans doute l’enroulement d’un serpent, considéré dans toute la région comme un ancêtre divinisé (Asante et Cerol, Encyclopedia of African religion, vol. 2, p. 607-608).
