Condition
Very good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. As attesting the drawing published in the catalogue the bowl is formerly broken and glued as the two arms. A finger of the proper left hand is missing. Erosion to the base and a thin crack on the proper left side. Beautiful dark patina, encrusted elsewhere.

Catalogue Note
Acquise en 1896 par le lieutenant général Augustus Henry Lane Fox Pitt-Rivers, cette statue des Îles Salomon impose sa « beauté grave qui intrigue et exerce sur le regard une ascendance magnétique » (Mélandri et Révolon, L’éclat des ombres. L’art en noir et blanc des îles Salomon, 2014, p. 11). Cette fascination tient ici notamment de la sobriété sculpturale de l’œuvre et du contraste entre sa teinte d’un noir profond et les yeux éclatants, peints en blanc. Si la longue coiffe qui équilibre la figuration - également visible sur la sculpture photographiée in situ par J.W Beattie en 1913 (Waite, Arts des Îles Salomon, 1983, p. 78) - est caractéristique des œuvres des Salomon orientales, l'épure de son style géométrique, jouant sur la tension des courbes et les lignes anguleuses, est particulièrement rare.
