Condition
Very good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. The rear of the base is missing and five drill holes are visible under it. Deap patina with remains of ochre pigments to the hollows of the carving from it's ritual use. As visible in the catalogue illustration the shell earrings are very well preserved

Catalogue Note
Caractéristique de la statuaire de l’embouchure du fleuve Sepik, notamment par sa coiffe sculptée en champlevé, cette statue kandimboang se distingue par la rare puissance de ses volumes. S'y ajoute la beauté de la patine, témoin des applications répétées de pigments ocre visant à activer ses pouvoirs. A la force des masses musculaires répond l'impression de majesté, née de la tension de la pose et traduite par la dynamique des lignes. Les délicates volutes - taillées à la pierre – des scarifications rituelles animant la poitrine et les ornements d’oreilles en coquillage signifient son ancestralité. S’impose finalement la force du visage à la barbe finement sculptée, où le long nez affirme la virilité de l’ancêtre tandis que le regard saisissant lui confère toute sa présence.
Représentant le héros mythique fondateur du clan, ces figures étaient destinées à accompagner chaque individu dans toutes les étapes de sa vie, à commencer par son initiation. « Conservées le plus souvent dans la maisons des hommes, ces sculptures recevaient des offrandes de fleurs, de noix d’aréquier ou de feuilles lors des invocations » (Peltier, Schindlbeck et Kaufmann, Sepik. Arts de Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, 2015, p. 182).
