Condition
Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. The 3 remains feathers are consolidated with nails. Both forearms are broken and glued as well as the front angle of the longer part of the skirt and both feet. The polychromy is very well preserved with only some lacks in places. Erosion on the edges and 4 small drill holes to the back of the figure.

Catalogue Note
La liste illustre des artistes et intellectuels qui collectionnèrent les poupées kachina témoigne de la fascination qu’elles exercèrent dès le début du XXe siècle, notamment sur les Surréalistes. Paul Eluard les considérait comme « ce qu’il y a de plus beau au monde » (Lettres à Gala, 1924-1948). Sculptées dans du bois de peuplier, arbre totémique de la liturgie Hopi, ces œuvres intervenaient dans les cultes agraires et servaient à éduquer les enfants aux rites et aux croyances.
Chacune représente un danseur incarnant un esprit spécifique de la cosmogonie Hopi. Cette poupée kachina représente Tasap, personnifiant le peuple Navajo voisin. Son trait caractéristique est le masque-cagoule surmonté de plumes.
