Condition

The censer and cover are in overall good condition. They are heavily cast and the gilding a rich golden tone. There is pitting to the enamels on both the body and cover, areas of loss to the enamels particularly to the lotus flowers around the shoulders of the censer and small areas where the enamels have been filled. The enamels are of a slightly darker tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.

Catalogue Note

A censer and cover with a similarly shaped gilt-bronze handle, gilt-bronze openwork frieze of entwined sinuous dragons and gilt-bronze animal handles, and bearing a Jingtai mark dated to the 15th century, is illustrated in Masterpieces of Chinese Enamel Ware in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1971, pl. 3. Compare the pair to the present censer and cover, sold at Christie's New York, 11th May 1981, lot 562.
