There are minor losses to the lacquer around the rim of the cover which may have been repainted. There are scattered cracks to the lacquer of the cover which is otherwise in good condition. There are losses and chips to the rim of the box, the largest a ca. 2cm wide chip to the lacquer with the wood core visible and a ca. 1cm large chip with a. 7cm wide crescent-shaped area of cracks to the interior of the rim. The rim was repainted. There is a ca. 1cm wide loss to the lacquer to the foot and small areas of retouching to the foot. Otherwise the carving of the box is in overall good condition. Box and cover could do with a cleaning, the cinnabar red is of a slightly lighter and less vibrant tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
