Cette pose singulière, caractéristique de la statuaire Luluwa et adoptée par quelques coupes anthropomorphes des Kuba voisins, identifierait « un chasseur exhalant la fumée du cannabis sur la statue pour favoriser le succès de la chasse » (Binkley et Darish, Kuba, 2009, p. 126). En pays Luluwa, le culte du chanvre, Riamba, était associé à celui de la chasse. Les statuettes qui - comme ici - relevaient de ces cultes, étaient utilisées par les « chasseurs qui les attachaient à la ceinture, leur parlaient et auxquels, en retour, elles portaient chance. Dans le rituel de chasse, on nourrissait les statues, qui placées sur un monticule de terre, assistaient à la chasse » (Kerchache, Paudrat et Stephan, L’art Africain, 1988, p. 580). Celle-ci se distingue par la dynamique de la sculpture, accentuée par le raffinement des détails anatomiques (notamment les mains), et de la coiffe.
