Gianfranco Baruchello si è concentrato nella sua cinquantennale carriera nella creazione di quadri il cui alfabeto di segni crea un archivio mobile di immagini caratterizzate da un grafismo quasi calligrafico, in sospeso tra codice linguistico e codice visivo. Nella sua opera Baruchello mappa i meccanismi del pensiero umano: i suoi quadri sono rappresentazioni visive del rapporto tra l’interiorità della psiche e l’esteriorità del corpo. Attraverso un percorso di miniaturizzazione, Baruchello ha realizzato opere narrative complesse eppure leggere e sempre imprevedibili: gli oggetti che compaiono nei suoi quadri e nelle sue scatole sono scomposti, frammentati, rimpiccioliti, resi misteriosi e disseminati sullo spazio dell’opera. I quadri di Baruchello sono un dettaglio dello spazio mentale che indaga l’inconscio e il mondo onirico. Molto legato alla psicanalisi, Baruchello ebbe profondi e privilegiati rapporti di amicizia con alcuni degli attori fondamentali del XX secolo tra cui Marcel Duchamp, che fu il suo mentore e di cui si fece portavoce in Europa.
From a Body of Spotted Salamander del 1972, è un esempio magistrale del lavoro di Baruchello. Una salamandra maculata posta nell’angolo superiore sinistro dà il titolo in inglese all’opera (dettaglio che sottolinea una forte vocazione internazionalista dell’autore): il rettile è un anfibio dalla forte carica mitologica che fin dall’antichità, e in particolare nel medioevo, fu investito della capacità di resistere al fuoco e dunque identificato come la persona retta che passa indenne attraverso le tribolazioni e le tentazioni della vita, un simbolo dell'uomo giusto. che è un manifesto dell’opera di Baruchello. Nell’opera compaiono inoltre elementi iconici per l’autore come il profilo di alcune catene montuose, elementi che sembrano delineare il profilo di organi umani oltre a profili di navi da guerra e di missili, simboli di una manifesta critica nei confronti della guerra e del militarismo - tematica molto cara all’artista - presenti nelle sue opere degli anni Sessanta e Settanta.

Gianfranco Baruchello, in his fifty year-long career, concentrated on the creation of paintings that had an alphabet of signs which created an archive of images characterized by nearly calligraphic images, suspended in between linguistic and visual codes. In his works, Baruchello maps the mechanisms of human thought: his paintings are visual representations of the relationship between the internal psyche and the external body. Through a path of miniaturization, Baruchello realized complex narrative pieces that always remained light and unpredictable: the objects that appear in his paintings and in his boxes are deconstructed, fragmented, made smaller and disseminated on the surface of the piece. The paintings of Baruchello are a detail in the mental space that investigates the unconscious and the oniric world. In close contact with the sphere of psychanalysis, Baruchello had deep and privileged friendships with some of the fundamental players of the XX^th century, such as Marcel Duchamp, who was his mentor and to whom he became spokesman in Europe.
From a Body of Spotted Salamander, 1972, is an exceptional example of Baruchello’s work. A maculated salamander set on the upper corner gives the English title to the work (detail that indicates the artist strong international inclination): the reptile is an amphibious with a strong mythological connotation of antiquity, and in particular in the middle ages, it was considered to be able to resist fire and thus identified as a person who passes unharmed through life’s tribulations and temptations, a symbol of the right man.  The research for consciousness, a manifest in Baruchello’s work. In the piece there are also other iconic elements of the author, such as mountain chains, elements that seem to delineate the profile of human organs or of war ships and rockets, metaphor that condemns war and militarization – theme that the artist cares about particularly – and our found in his works of the sixties and seventies.
