[Chevalier X] It was commissioned to me in occasion of the celebrative inauguration for the exhibition at Beaubourg “Paris-Moscou”, an extraordinary event, a real exchange of two important capitals. For this Parallel exposition, Jouffroy had asked me to reproduce the Chevalier X of Derain, considered the first real collage in the history of modern art. Of this piece, acquired by Breton in 1920 and then sold to a Russian collector, but not lent for the Beaubourg exposition, reproductions did not exist. I had to re-construct this work based on the writings of Aragon (who had organized in 1920 the exhibition on collage in Paris), from the description on the 1920 catalogue, on a small book of Breton, Les Pas Perdus. None of these texts gave me an exact description of this Chevalier: they spoke about a puppet, of a pantin, with legs that went wherever they wanted, reading a newspaper (maybe this was the collage!), it was a theatrical scene, having a rideau behind him.
