Description

  • A Roman Marble Portrait Head of a Woman

  • Height 20 cm. 7 7/8 in.
her eyes with incised irises and drilled crescentic pupils, the eyebrows incised and meeting, her straight, centrally parted hair pulled back behind the ears, lifted up in a broad plait at the nape of the neck, and fixed on top of the head, three wisps of hair escaping above the forehead; no restorations.

Provenance

French private collection, 19th Century (consistent with Carrara marble socle, nose drilled for restoration, and overall patina)

Condition

Chin fragmentary, proper left side of lower lip and upper lip chipped, front of nose missing, and corners of hair in back chipped, root-marks overall especially in back.
