  • Total height 70 cm. 27 9/16; heigh without plinth 65.5 cm. 25 5/8 in.
standing with his left leg resting against a tree-trunk support and clasping a long-haired puppy with both hands against his chest, the head of the dog resting against his left shoulder, his oval face with parted lips, his hair falling in comma-shaped locks over the forehead; head repaired but belonging.

private collection, 19th Century or earlier (based on the extensive weathering)

Condition

As described, highly weathered surface overall, stress crack across proper right hindleg of dog.

Other copies of this type are three heavily restored torsos, one in Catania (G. Libertini, Il museo Biscari, 1930, p. 32, no. 61, pl. 17), another in Florence (A. Romualdi, ed., I marmi antichi conservati nella Villa Corsini a Castello, vol. 1, 2004, p. 92, no. 34), a third, with added cape, in Rome (D. Candilio and M. de Angelis d'Ossat, eds., La collezione di antichità Pallavicini Rospigliosi (MonAnt, vol. 71), 2014, p. 120f., no. 83, pl. 75). The original should be dated in the Hellenistic period.
