Description
- A Roman Marble Head of a Bearded God, probably Asklepios

- Total Height 43 cm. 17 in.; height of head 26 cm. 10 1/4 in.
with thick unruly beard, long moustache with voluted ends, and parted lips, his wavy hair radiating from the crown, bound in a fillet and falling in a mane of loose curls over the ears and nape of the neck; restored are the nose, the upper lip with part of moustache, and half of the crown including part of the fillet.

Condition
As shown and described. Head set on 18th century Italian Cararra marble herm bust. Nose and upper lip with moustache restored in one piece of coarse grained Greek marble similar to the one used for the ancient head. Two stable stress cracks radiating from crown of head in back. A broad area encompassing top of proper right back of hair, including part of diadem, has been restored in marble. Various chips and abrasions overall.

The present head is likely to be the copy of a Greek original from the 4th cent. B.C.; cf. the head of a statue of Asklepios from Epidauros: N. Kaltsas, Sculpture in the National Archaeological Museum Athens, 2002, p. 343, no. 727.
