Description

  • A Roman Marble Torso of Artemis

  • Height 24 in. 61 cm.
running with her left leg forward, her right arm probably formerly raised to reach to her quiver (traces preserved), her left arm (separately carved and doweled on) probably once extended and holding the bow, and wearing a short, girdled peplos with overfold leaving her right breast bare, and a quiver strap across the chest; no restorations.

Condition

Proper right breast fragmentary, minor chips and abrasions, surface weathered.

Similar depictions of Artemis, which were discussed by P. Sestieri, Rivista dell'Istituto nazionale d'archeologia e storia dell'arte, vol. 8, 1940, pp. 107ff., sometimes appear in a funerary context; cf. the relief on a funerary altar in the Louvre (H. Wrede, Consecratio in formam deorum, 1981, p. 226, no. 91, pl. 12,2) or a sarcophagus in Thessaloniki (Wrede, op. cit., p. 229, no. 99, pl. 21,4). A related statue was sold at Sotheby’s, New York, December 14th, 1994, no. 143.
