Catalogue Note

The Locomobile Company of America, so-named because it originally produced steam cars, was a pioneering American automobile manufacturer that operated from 1899 to 1929. In 1908, a Locomobile racecar bearing race number 16 became the first American winner of the Vanderbilt Cup, the first major international auto race held in the United States. “Old 16”, as the car came to be known, is now in the collection of the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.
