Catalogue Note
Boston’s Clinton Market opened in 1829 and originally included stands for twenty-four licensed butchers. The market, which was close to busy wharves in the city’s North End that also provided produce to nearby Quincy Market, became the meat-packing and distribution center for greater Boston and remained in operation until 1971, when it burned to the ground in a suspicious fire.
