Condition

This work was not examined out of its frame; edges show and are intact; Appears to be in good condition; sheet appears to be hinged to archival backing with pieces of tape, verso. A note along the bottom edge of the sheet in another hand reads as follows: "From a drawing made by Everett Shinn at Mark Twain's house on West 10th Street New York City at about 1903."

The present work is matted together with a note from Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens) to the artist, inviting him to his home for a sitting of this  portrait.  It reads: Good.  Come any morning 10:30 or 11.  I am always on deck, then, in my den, which has a good light.  Yours sincerely, SLC   14 West 10th Street  Feb. 8th.
