Catalogue Note

According to a letter from Dr. Ila Weiss dated January 27, 2002, "The painting seems to be one of a series of views by Sanford R. Gifford of Mt. Washington from the Saco of 1854-1855, based on a compositional drawing in a sketchbook at the Albany Institute inscribed, 'On the Saco, Sept 18th '54.' ...it is the most elaborate variation on the basic composition, introducing the two figures in the left foreground, the farm house and cows at the water's edge in the middle distance, and a haywain and figures in the distance below the mountain. It is the only known version to effect the warm, pink glow of early morning light. (The others display highlighting from the west, as does the drawing.) The elaboration of subject matter suggests that it was a trial for a larger exhibition piece, but none is known to have resulted."
