Condition
Overall in good condition. When viewed in person, the box displays an impressive scale and sculptural decoration. The surfaces with light surface scratches, minor traces of rubbing and discoloration to the patina, minute abrasions and light surface dirt to the recessed areas, consistent with age and gentle use. The locking system of the jewelry box is in working order and this lot is offered with two keys. The patina is darker in the recessed areas which would have been less accessible to cleaning, handling and atmospheric impact. A few minor areas of green oxidation to the recessed areas of the hydra’s heads, visible in the catalogue illustration. The key hole is hidden behind the central stag-horn beetle cast. The lid opens to reveal the original green baize lined interior fitted with a deep compartment and an upper tier removable shallow tray. The baize interior with dust and dryness, consistent with age and gentle use. A great object with beautiful execution and sculptural details.
