Catalogue Note

Sotheby’s is privileged to be offering the earliest work to ever appear at auction by Hassan Soliman. Dated in 1957, it was painted before the artist turned 30. The Nuns is a mysterious introspective painting which infuses a deep sense of serenity and humbleness upon the viewer as a reflection of the lifestyle of the nuns. The Nuns was given as wedding gift in 1957 to the family of Dr. Ahmed Fakhry; an eminent Egyptian archaeologist who worked in Siwa and Dahshour.  An exceptional work, with an unforgiving power, it demonstrates the great capacity of Soliman’s oeuvre.  Hassan Soliman is effortlessly able to permeate emotions of piety and reverence onto the bent faces of the two nuns against a mosaic of crosses on the background.
