Condition

The canvas has been relined. Overall, the picture presents well and is in good condition. There are some scattered signs of frame rubbing towards the framing edges. Ultra-violet light reveals some small strokes of retouching in and around her hair, an area to the left of her mouth and some scattered strokes towards the edges and in the background. There also appears to be some strengthening to some parts of signature. The work is ready to hang. Presented in a substantial, gilt Salon-style frame which appears to be of the period.

Catalogue Note

Badin was a pupil of Alexandre Cabanel and Paul Baudry, whose academic influence is clearly visible in the present Salon painting. Here the Greek mythological sorceress Circe stands contrapposto, bearing the cup which she offered to Odysseus' crew in the Odyssey, and the wand with which she turned them into swine.
