Catalogue Note

Henri Varenne was a diverse and technically skilled sculptor who worked across a variety of media, including plaster, marble, wood and medal engraving. He debuted at the salon of 1886 with a plaster of the Head of Saint John the Baptist, and continued exhibiting varied works, be they Biblical, allegorical, mythological or portraits. The present group, Fin d'un Rêve, was first executed in plaster in 1893 and a marble life-size version of the model is in the Thermes Nationaux in Aix-les-Bains, France. The sculpture shows particularly fine carving in the winding tree roots, and the manner in which Varenne has depicted internalised emotion is reminiscent of Rodin.
