Catalogue Note
Auguste-Louis Mathurin Moreau belonged to the Moreau dynasty who were among the 19th century’s most prolific French sculptors. Spanning three generations, the brothers Mathurin, Hippolyte, and Auguste gained most fame. All exhibiting regularly at the Paris Salon, they were renowned for their elegant and graceful genre scenes and allegories. Auguste Moreau, as the youngest son, trained for a while in his father’s workshop in Dijon. He debuted at the Salon of 1861, and continued showing his work there until 1913. He was especially talented in depicting children and young women, which radiate a sense of innocence.
