Description
- Léopold Bernhard Bernstamm
- L'Amour désarmé (Cupid disarmed)
- signed and dated: L B. BERNSTAMM. / PARIS. 1908
- white marble
Condition
The marble is in excellent condition overall. The index and first finger on Cupid's left hand are original but are re-attached. There are a few filled natural inclusions which in some cases have slightly discoloured, notably on Venus's right thigh and around the base. There are two areas of natural dark impurities in the marble on Venus's left breast and left elbow. There was probably originally a bow held in Venus's right hand which is now missing, but there is no consequence damage to the hand.

Catalogue Note
Léopold Bernstamm was a cosmopolitan sculptor. Born in Riga, he studied in St Petersburg and Florence before completing his training with Antonin Mercié in Paris. He there became honourable president of the Russian section of the Maison des Arts, and was appointed director of the Grévin Museum in 1886. Later in his career, Bernstamm gained a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900, leading to his appointment as commandeur de la Légion d'honneur in 1908.
Though his oeuvre was dominated by portrait busts, Bernstamm created several elegant female nudes in marble. This charming group is an important marble version of a model that proved so popular that it inspired numerous ceramic copies produced by Sèvres.
