Catalogue Note
This enchanting and affectionate group of a mother bear and her cub epitomises the style of sculpture that Sirio Tofanari was most famous for: playful groups of animals and their young. Although undoubtedly influenced by the animalier sculptors of the 19th century, Tofanari approached his subject from a more modernist, elegantly stylised, background. Born in Florence, Tofanari was self taught, and lived and exhibited in a multitude of cities, including Milan, London, Paris, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro.
