Condition
Overall the condition of the terracotta is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are some minor stable firing cracks consistent with the material. There are a few chips and abrasions around the bottom edge. There are some remnants of glue in some of the firing cracks which may indicate a possible restored break. There are 2 paper labels on the underside inscribed in ink.

Catalogue Note
Julien Dillens was the son of painter Henri Dillens, and attended the Academy of Brussels to be trained as a painter. He was taught sculpting in clay by Eugène Simonis. Dillens was famous for his unapologetic realism. He received numerous commissions from the city of Brussels, including for a number of decorative reliefs for the Oldmasters Museum.
