Catalogue Note

These monumental vases were produced when Japonisme was the highly influential style in European decorative art. The superb quality of the pair can be compared to Baccarat vases decorated in this Japanese-style, that were being exhibited in the last decades of the 19th century; an ormolu mounted pair of Baccarat vases etched and gilt with similar scenes of herons was sold: Sotheby's, The Great Exhibitions sale, 31 October 2006, lot 631, whilst a further pair of the same design on blue-tinted ground were offered at Bonhams London, 30 May 2012, lot 89.
