Catalogue Note

After teaching Alfred Garnier (1853-c. 1910), Paul Grandhomme (1851-1944) sold his workshop, kiln and tools in 1877. That year, however, their friend and patron, the architect Edouard Corroyer (1835-1904), commissioned an enamel plaque entitled Musique from them. Grandhomme and Garnier then started working together on enamel pieces which brought them success, so they were able to exhibit at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. Two enamel plaques by the artists are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, one depicting a muse holding a harp by a lion (no. 1994.180), the other Hercules and the Twelve Labours (no. 2011.357). Grandhomme and Garnier were the last two enamel painters to collaborate with Gustave Moreau.

Ambroise Paré (1510-1590) was a French barber surgeon who worked for Kings Henry II, Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III. He is widely considered one of the fathers of modern surgery, pathology and battlefield medicine.
