Condition
In overall good condition. The gilding with a very good colour. There is some minor tarnishing to the bronze at the top of the chandelier. The glass bowl apparently original. This has been formerly fitted for electricity but Sotheby's recommends consulting a professional to re-wire if required. There is some movement to the central stem as can be seen in the catalogue photograph but this is barely noticeable.

Catalogue Note
The firm of Marrel Frères was formed by the brothers Jean-Pierre-Nazaire (circa 1798 - 1858) and Antoine-Benoit-Roch (c.1804-1882), sons of a goldsmith from south-eastern France. Jean-Pierre registered a mark as a goldsmith in 1833, while Antoine-Benoit was the modeller for the firm. They became known for their interest in polychromatic objects – employing enamel, painted glass and semi-precious stones in their works. Although known for objet de curiosité the Marrel firm, like their contemporary rival François-Désiré Froment-Meurice, also made large chandeliers.
