Condition

The canvas has modern glue relining which is firm and stable. The painting appears to have been restored in the recent past and the paint surface overall is in good condition under a clear and fresh varnish. The skull and vase of flowers have retained good detail. The fruits on the plate upper right are perhaps a little thinned in areas and the right most grapes have sunk slightly into the background, however this does not affect the reading of the painting overall. Inspection under a UV is somewhat impeded by the varnish though there appear to be minor areas of retouching scattered in the background and at the left and right edges attending to old frame abrasion. There is a vertical line of finely applied retouching of approximately running parallel to the right-hand edge, perhaps old damage from the stretcher. There is a horizontal line every touching of approximately 2 inches lower right and retouching has been sensitively applied to the craquelure in place, such as the eye sockets of the skull. The painting requires no further work and is ready to hang in its present state. Offered in a decoratively carved gilt wood frame.
