Condition

Panel is cradled, flat and stable. There is overall excellent retention of the paint surface and detail throughout. Under ultraviolet light: there are a few very small retouches in sky and clouds; a few on the large fish to right of center, and some in the lower right corner. Painting is presentable and can be hung as is. In an elaborately carved and gilt wood frame with minor nicks.

Catalogue Note

Painted in 1660, this panel is typical of Jan van Kessel’s fish still life style, yet the composition is in fact the invention of Joris van Son, executed four years earlier in 1656.  Van Son’s painting (sold London, Christie’s, 10 April 1987, lot 23) represented Water in a series depicting the Four Elements, as may originally have been the case for the present panel.
