Description

  • A FINE GOLD, ENAMEL AND HARDSTONE QUARTER REPEATING PAIR CASE WATCH, CIRCA 1770
  • gold, enamel, agate, hardstone
  • diameter 49mm
• gilt verge movement, balance cock pierced and engraved with scrolls, diamond endstone, quarter repeating on a bell • gilt dust cap • white enamel dial, Roman numerals, blued steel beetle and poker hands • the case pierced and engraved with foliate scrolls and a grotesque mask, the outer case quartered by four polychrome enamel portraits of fashionable ladies, spaced by vari-color hardstone panels, centered by an exotic bird set with jewels • inner case stamped twice with case maker's mark HT possibly for Henry Cleavor Taylor or Henry Teague, the movement and dust cap signed Henry Long London, colored watch paper printed "the map of a good woman's heart" 

Condition

Movement - running and repeating, the enamel with some very minor losses to edges, overall good quality. Dial - in good order with only minor marks to the surface. Cases – Inner case - with moderate wear Outer case - some stones and portraits with reinforced settings, portraits themselves are in good order; one green stone lacking to the end of the sprig beneath standing bird.
