Condition

Overall in very good condition. The lid with very gentle wear and rubbing along the bottom rim, and with a minute surface loss along the bottom rim. The upper knop with gentle rubbing. The lower box with one small area of enamel loss just below the outer rim (approximately 1/8 x 1/4 inch), which appears to have been sensitively retouched with clear lacquer. The rim of the lower box is slightly out of round in this area, and under magnification displays fine craquelure in this area. With a small isolated area of restoration (3/16 inch diameter) to the midsection of the lower box, and with a very small shallow indentation just above the foot. The interior of the box and underside of the lid are enamelled in hues of aqua and ochre, with fine craquelure to select areas of the interior lid and box. The underside with a few small traces of surface oxidation. The enamel decoration is exquisitely executed, displaying transparent layers of luminous vivid hues. The coloration of the enamel work is more nuanced than seen in the catalogue illustrations, which do not fully capture the refinement and delicacy of the surfaces. A gorgeous object.
