Grosvenor Gallery, London, 1890, no.11

Condition

Original canvas. There is a stretcher bar mark and a craquelure pattern across the surface, which is made more obvious due to the surface dirt. A few small areas of discloured retouching in the sky. The work would improve from cleaning. Ultraviolet light reveals some pigments that fluoresce which appear to be pigments of the artist. There appears to be some retouching that relates to the discolourings in sky mentioned above. Held in an impressive original exhibition frame, some minor losses.

Catalogue Note

This large painting was one of only two pictures exhibited by Stott at the Grosvenor Gallery. Many of Stott's dramatic seascapes were painted close to his home at Ravenglass in Cumbria and were influenced by his study of the expansive coastal views by Degas who he had met in 1883 and Whistler who introduced the two artists. Many of these pictures, mainly small-scale pastels, were included in the comprehensive exhibition of Stott's work at Gallery Oldham in 2003.
