Catalogue Note

Waimate was an iron full-rigged ship built in 1874 for the British Eastern Shipping Company, Liverpool, originally named Hindostan. In 1875 she was sold to the New Zealand Shipping Company and made twenty-two voyages to New Zealand as a passenger and immigrant vessel until 1891. She was subsequently sold to the Russians and renamed Vaklyraian. Her last bound voyage was from Newcastle, New South Wales to Iquique, Chile but she was never heard from again.
