Description

  • Leo Belgicus. Amsterdam: Nicolaes Visscher I, 1656, 440 x 560mm., double-page engraved map, hand-coloured, strengthened at fold, a few marginal tears

Printed from the second of two very similar copperplates engraved by the prominent cartographer Hessel Gerritsz, mapmaker to the Dutch East India Company, which had passed into the hands of the Visscher family. The second Gerritsz plate identified by van der Heijden was probably engraved for Cornelis Claesz., the leading cartographic publisher in Amsterdam.
