The volumes are numbered 1-9 on the spines: the first five volumes of Modern Wiltshire (also numbered vol.1-5 on the titles) are each divided into two parts; the sixth and seventh volumes cover Old and New Sarum (parts 1 and 2 respectively); the eighth volume is the Ancient History of South Wiltshire and the ninth the Ancient History of North Wiltshire. Loosely inserted is a letter regarding sales and prices of Hoare's Wiltshire in London auctions, dated April, 1867; also old manuscript notes on slips, some newspaper cuttings, 4 engraved plates and one large photograph.
