Catalogue Note
This unique copy of Horsfield's Sussex was extra-illustrated and extended by the print collector and numismatist William Boyne, with three new printed title-pages (dated 1866) stating that this set has "83 additional engravings and drawings, and an account of the tokens, medals, etc. relating to the county, now divided into three volumes".
In addition to the extra illustrations there are various loosely inserted items, including an autograph letter from Robert Riviere regarding the binding of the book, two from J. Westell, bookseller, offering to buy the book from Quaritch and an extract from the original Sotheby's catalogue of Boyne's collection, where it is described as being a "large paper" copy. The letter from Riviere is probably to one of his major patrons, Frances Capper Brooke (others were the Duke of Devonshire and Samuel Christie Miller), the owner of this copy, whose library numbered over 20,000 volumes.
