Condition
The work in an oil on paper.
Under UV light, minor retouches are visible on the corner of the emperor's deck. Small retouches on the lower left in the sand are visible, as well as beneath the group of men's feet, and under the young wrestler on the right.
Good general condition.
Colors seem clearer in the catalogue.

Exécutée en 1858, cette composition est une étude pour le tableau présenté au Salon de 1859 sous le même titre, aujourd'hui conservé à la Yale University Art Gallery.
Le professeur Ackerman décrit ainsi notre tableau : "Une esquisse à l'huile sur un dessin de perspective élaborée (probablement par un spécialiste de la perspective), avec un dessin soigné du groupe principal. La couleur est limitée. Gérôme fixa l'idée générale puis changea d'avis pour de nombreux détails de l'oeuvre achevée".
