Condition
The painting was relined.
A scratch in the upper part above the lady's head is visible.
Under UV light, large cracks have been refilled - especially in the darker areas : drapery, chair, and fur.
A certain number of repaints are also visible : in the background, and in the clearer areas as well on the dress and on the model's shoulder.
The painting's colors are warmer in reality.

Catalogue Note
Le baron Charles Rivet (1800 - 1872) épousa Eugénie Gabrielle Barbou des Courières (1811 - 1885) en 1833. Ami de jeunesse de Delacroix, Charles Rivet était également très lié avec Bonington. Il fit en sa compagnie en 1826 un voyage à travers la Suisse et le nord de l'Italie (il semble que Delacroix ait été un temps associé à ce projet). Delacroix et Bonington étant amis avec Colin, c'est probablement par leur biais que le baron Rivet fit la connaissance de ce dernier. Parallèlement à sa passion pour la peinture, le baron Rivet fit carrière dans la politique et fut attaché de cabinet, préfet et député. Le coup d'Etat du 2 décembre 1851 devait mettre un terme à sa carrière politique. Le baron Rivet possédait plusieurs oeuvres, tableaux et dessins, de Delacroix et Bonington, notamment l'esquisse de La Mort de Sardanapale (Paris, musée du Louvre) que Delacroix lui avait offert.
