Condition

This important stained glass roundel formed the center of a smaller trilobe rose, originally located in the lower right corner of the big Rose window of the North transept of Notre Dame cathedral. The stained glass was dismantled by Viollet le Duc in 1862, and sold by the glass restorer Edouard Didron between 1877 and 1905. Two other very similar roundels depicting also two angels of the same series belonged to the collection of Gustave Revillod, and are since 1905 displayed in the musée d'Art et Histoire of Geneva. The present stained glass is in very good condition overall with a few minor replacements and retouch to the paint, in particular to the face of the angel and maybe to the incense burner. The led lining has been generally reinforced. The light grey square glass element forming a broach closing the angel's collar in the front may be a small replacement, as well as one small square elements in the angel's pink dress to the lower left. Three minor breaks to the angel's dress. Minor wear to the drawing of the grisaille clouds at the lower edge. The reverse of the glass appears to have been rubbed with a brush to clean the surface, and shows some remains of oxydation at a few places. Fantastic quality and condition.

Catalogue Note
